Stikk/Stephen Oran - Engine Room (03/29/08)

Former holy hip hop producer/rapper Stikk (who banged out beats for cats like Southern Gospeltality, Lil Raskull, Enock, and others) is now rollin' with an electric guitar and taken the stage name of Stephen Oran.

I was able to check out his brand of black rock (think Lenny Kravitz or Prince) at The Engine Room in Houston last night. Photos are below.

You can listen to his new stuff at: www.myspace.com/stephenoran

The Engine Room has a definite funk/alternative vibe. A phone booth in the back of the club caught my eye due to all of the band stickers on it - particulary one from the Tunnel Rats' Tunnel Vision album from several years back. (It's on the left side, second from the bottom.) I guess some HHH fans/street teamers have already been there and left their mark.

You can't really tell from any of the photos, but dude's got an all-girl band with one on the keys and another on the drums. His explanation for it? "Cuz, I'm fly like that."

The very first time I saw Stikk was at the SGR debut release party at Glory 2 Glory (back in 1999?) and he was playing electric guitar for one of Son of Jesse's tracks.

Kinda cool to see it come back around to that now.

The Tomb is Empty

Image from Heqi Gallery

Tomorrow/today we celebrate the Risen Lord. I pray your celebration is rich with life, grace, and peace.

The Empty Tomb

20:1-8pp -- Mt 28:1-8; Mk 16:1-8; Lk 24:1-10

1. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
2. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"
3. So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
6. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
7. as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.
8. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

10. Then the disciples went back to their homes,
11. but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12. and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13. They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him."
14. At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15. "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."
16. Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).
17. Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "
18. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Good Friday: The Atonement

Today is a dark, yet glorious day as we remember the sacrificial crucifixion of our Lord as the atonement for our sins.

Thankfully we know the rest of the story and will celebrate The Resurrection in just three days.

Best live show ever?!? Pigeon John @ Relevant Magazine's 5th Anniversary Party

Photo by Sketch the Journalist (Houston show)

Okay, so maybe not ever, but it's gotta be pretty high up the list.

I already knew Pigeon John was capable of controlling a crowd - but my man has stepped his game UP here.

Check out his near seamless hour-long set at the Relevant Magazine 5th Anniversary Party and tell me who you know that can rock a crowd like this?

Peep how he moves from song to song, switches up the back beats, gives the DJ his set, mixes in some familiar tunes, intros his songs, gives explanation for his songs, etc. etc.

Here's the link to download the mp3.

They play the recording of his set about 25 minutes into the podcast.

Relevant has also posted some photos from the show.

Worship the Liberating King

Today is Palm Sunday. I pray you had a chance to worship the Liberating King as we enter Holy Week.

News: Random Round-Up

A few HHH news items of late that have caught my eye:
  • The dope cover art for Trip Lee's next album titled "20/20." It has a cool, Lupe Fiasco vibe to it.

  • HCR (Holy Culture Radio) has a new record pool for gospel rap DJs. Find out more and sign up here.

  • Pigeon John has a fan call-in voice mail service. Hit him up at 818.237.4767 if you want drop a message. Prepare for wackiness.

  • Finally, I learned about a new Christian urban clothing company called Sacred Apparel. Check their banner below.

I love this dude's merch table. The ceramic pilgrims and wolves really set it off.

Catch my man bangin the washing machine in the clip below. About 1 minute in the camera gets in close enough for you tell what's going on.
