The Wade-O Radio Show Website Relaunches June 22

wor_black400

Although The Wade-O Radio Show successfully relaunched at the start of 2012, its web presence remained in flux. But on Friday, June 22 fans of the high-energy, multi-hour Christian hip hop program can look forward to the new WadeORadio.com.

“It wasn’t the ideal situation, but I think our new site is really a step forward for our ministry,” Wade “DJ Wade-O” Harris said.

In addition to being a central repository for all of the show’s podcasts and audio interviews, the revamped web destination boasts a new look and management system that Harris says will make it easier to publish fresh content on a daily basis.

“Visitors can look forward to blogs on pertinent issues that we all deal with and exclusive bonus mixtapes that will only be available at WadeORadio.com,” Harris said.

“And of course, each piece will be integrated with tools to make it easy for our visitors to share the content through their preferred social media outlets.”

Wade-O promises that episode 247 of the podcast will reveal more about the site including:

• An answer to why it took so long to relaunch
• What he learned during the hiatus, and
• How it will differ from other Christian hip hop spots already on the web

To find out the exact minute and second the site will republish visit WadeORadio.com and sign up for the e-mail newsletter.

Lecrae responds to the “Christian rapper” vs. “Rapper who is a Christian” debate (kind of)

lecrae-church-clothes-Officialcover
The “I’m-a-proud-Christian-rapper” versus the “I’d-prefer-you-just-say-I’m-a-rapper-who-is-a-Christian” debate is not a new one. However, it has been revived recently after two of the movement’s top selling artists have apparently switched strategies (at least when posed the question by secular hip hop media outlets.)

To recap:
  • Trip Lee, whose album The Good Life debuted at #2 on the overall iTunes sales charts on April 10, recently told XXL magazine that “I’m a Christian within hip-hop culture, and I think you’re going to be able to see that in my music.”
In a separate interview with HipHopDx.com he seemed to connote a similar preference for the “rapper who is a Christian” label:

“I think, you know, some people think of Christian Hip Hop as its own genre. Some people don’t. You know, I think it could go either way. If you want to think of it as a genre, that’s fine. Or if you want to think of it as there’s some people within Hip Hop who are Christians, who are intentionally communicating from a Christian worldview, that’s how I would probably describe myself.”

  • On April 27, without directly criticizing or downplaying the choices Trip, Lecrae, and many others have made regarding this issue, DJ Wade-O took to his podcast and e-mail newsletter to explain five reason why he prefers to call himself a “Christian DJ.” [Full disclosure: I write and record a weekly Holy Hip Hop News Blast segment for the show.]
  • Then, days after Lecrae dropped his free Church Clothes mixtape on May 10 (which, at the time of this post, has been downloaded over 180,000 times) used similar wording when asked about his preferred title when he spoke to HardKnock.tv.

This afternoon, May 21, Lecrae posted a blog on the Reach Records (the label he co-owns and records for) to clear the air (somewhat.)
There were always Christians doing hip hop but the music was usually inaccessible or unpopular. I would listen to the radio and wonder where was the Christians perspective being heard in Hip Hop culture? Not the radio. "Contemporary Christian music" had developed, "Gospel" had its lane but where was hip-hop that articulated faith in Jesus? Hard to find.
Interestingly enough those genres are the only one's categorized based off the content and not the style of music. Though it gives people identifying marks for their music it can also in many ways limit their reach. Many people take these titles to mean this is for an exclusively Christian audience. If indeed the true Gospel is what transforms people outside the faith why should the term Gospel seem exclusively for those in the faith? Of course that's not the intention, it's just a reality that any missionary should consider.
As far as hip hop done well by Christians, there were always a few groups & artists each year that helped ease my woes but I was not at all content. The general market was flooded with Hip Hop artists but I rarely heard anything that embodied a worldview that God would endorse.
Trying to be a part of the solution, I took to the studio and recorded an Album. It captured my southern roots, love for lyricism, and I tried to make it as current in production as I could. (I produced most of it.) The result was a tool for my fellas at the half way house and other areas with similar struggles.
That project opened doors for me to travel a bit, mostly prisons, churches, and inner city outreaches, and perform my songs. I found that I had a gift for catalyzing people toward truth and creating anthems for Christians to live sacrificially and unashamedly for their faith.
Personally I couldn’t simply talk about change I had to be apart of it so I spent my life living in the inner city, doing foreign missions, and serving in the local church. All was ammunition for my Rebel album. My life bled out in that project and the result was God showing tremendous fruit and people's lives being transformed by His power.
One problem I faced was that in my hood, only the kids in after school programs and the Christians were feeling it. Sure some were rejecting the Gospel but others didn't give it a spin at all due to the labels placed on it.
    My take?
Be led by the Holy Spirit and use your words and labels strategically. Also know that regardless of your preference, some people will label you and your music however they best see fit.

The Wade-O Radio Show and website relaunches January 6, 2012

Photobucket

After a three month hiatus, The Wade-O Radio Show is back! Fans of Christian hip hop music, culture, and interviews can look forward to the relaunch of the high-energy, multi-hour program and website on January 6, 2012.

Photobucket

Listeners can also look forward to the addition of:

• The “Going In” Mix – DJ Wade-O will be kicking off each show with a 15 minute blend of the latest and hottest Christian hip hop music designed to get listeners pumped up and locked in.

• “Wade’s World Wide Top 5 (3WT5)” – It’s called “World Wide” for the simple reason that the countdown will consist of singles from the United States as well as from places like Jamaica and the United Kingdom (or wherever musicians who love Jesus and hip hop are producing the most-notable audio art.) The votes will be listener-based via nominations and elections made at wadeoradio.com.

Additionally, Chris Belmont and JahRock'n Productions (Heesun Lee, Seda) will be joining the team to support the production process. And I'll be back with the regular Holy Hip Hop News Blast segments too.

“We’re very excited about the re-launch and expect that a lot of people will have questions about the show’s hiatus,” Wade-O said. “All of that will be explained in the return episode alongside some new segments and sounds we believe will really speak to our audience.”

7VNSEAL talks mixtapes, Wu-Tang, and sitting down before taking the mic

Photobucket

I recently caught up with 7VN Seal a.k.a Gods Dagger (formally 80proof) via e-mail to discuss his free mixtape, his Wu-Tang influence, and coming off the mic after his Christian conversion.

Sketch: Early in your rap career you had some association with the Wu-Tang Killa Bees family. What events took you out of that world and into the church?

7VN Seal: My association with some of Wu was mostly just doing a few tracks here and there. The events leading up to my conversion were plain and simple: it was all lustful sin!

I was doing music for a while, so to finally work with guys like the Killarmy told me I was on my way to the top because they are ill artists. My main connection didn’t happen overnight, but during the time I knew them they treated me good and we heavily promoted each other on the tracks I was working on. By the time I linked up with Shyheim I wanted to start some shows out in Texas and came to San Antonio to begin to work on the P.R. side of things.

So these events in 2007-09 and prior led me to get to where I am in Christ today. In a nut shell, GOD SET ME UP! One night, on March 16th, when I was supposed to go to a publicity event for our music I spoke to a pastor. He said he had a word for me from the Lord that this was my last chance. I knew right there that I should have been dead a long time ago or in the penitentiary for a long time.

Now I truly know His mercy and grace was over my life. That night I left everything, accepted Christ, and ended up at Victory Gospel Chapel under headship with Bishop Donny Banks. I remain in Christ to this day. I mean there is way more to this story, but this is the short end of it.

Sketch: What positive or negative lessons did you learn in being around that type of environment?

7VN Seal: Shoot, what I thought was positive was really the destruction of my soul. A lot of smoke and liquor and, well, you know the rest. I was into some of that before I knew those guys but now it was just amplified ten times over. It was all sin – dirty, evil sin - nothing good was in it but Satan’s playground. But I did learn about the business.

Sketch: Wu-Tang is known for having their own philosophy/religious outlook on life. How difficult was it for you to “unlearn” that way of thinking and reconcile it with your current Christian faith?

7VN Seal: My faith then, if that, was not Godbody or 5% or Islam. I know some of them share those ideas of religion, but I was never really into all of that because I’m a very skeptical cat and very analytical. So I didn’t even agree with a lot of it but we still did music together. I had heard of Jesus then but never knew him as the Christ.

Photobucket

Sketch: When we first spoke, you were taking some time to sit down under the leadership of your church in San Antonio before coming back to the mic as a recording artist. What did you learn during that time and is that a process you would recommend for other rappers coming “out of the world” who might want to immediately use their musical talent for the cause of Christ?

7VN Seal: What I learned was that my life wasn’t as glamorous as I thought it was in comparison to the Word of God. I was gaining the world but my soul was lost. I learned to shut up and sit down somewhere and get Christ and stay saved.

For too many years my flesh and soul had been in charge. It was time for my spirit man to be led by the Holy Ghost. Hebrews 4:12 “…you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!” says it all.

Secondly, I would recommend the process our Lord lays out in Mathew 6:33 – “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” Don’t be so quick to do music. First you have to be delivered from self before you can be a leader to others. Learn to follow and serve in the kingdom, serve the body of Christ and be under headship. The bible says to be submissive to those whom God has put over you. God doesn’t need rebel rappers without headship. He needs real men and woman of God.

Better to be obedient than to sacrifice. Psalm 37:4 says “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Patience takes time to build. Take the time for the Lord to renew your mind. That doesn’t happen overnight, that takes a lot of prayer and fasting in the Lord.

Sketch: Why did you decide to link up with DJ Wade-O for the “Keep My Boots Madd Muddy” mixtape and where does that title come from?

7VN Seal: One day I was searching for Christian websites and came across wadeoradio.com. Anyhow, I call this dude up and told him my testimony and from there on we starting building and did an in-depth interview on his show. We kept building and behold, a year later we were working on a project for Christ.

Regarding the title, the bottom line is Ephesians 6:12 - “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

This is everyday, not just when you feel like it. I’ve got stories that can put chills down people’s spines. I know for a fact that demons exist, that Satan exists. We had a personal relationship if you will back in the day.

So if they are real, then the word of God has to be real.

Now back to Ephesians and the weapons of war, I gots to keep my boots madd muddy, yo. If not then I can be kept off guard and I don’t like that at all!

Free DL: theBREAX & DJ Wade-O "BREAX Over" mixtape

Photobucket

If you're anything as busy (and lazy) as me then you might have accidentally slept on the daily downloads from the G.O.O.D. Fridays, Dre' Murray's "12 Days of Christmas," or theBREAX's "Remix Wednesdays."

I prefer a more "boxed set" than "collect them all" approach, but to each his own.

Thankfully, theBREAX have cats like me in mind. This week, they dropped BREAX Over - a mixtape by DJ Wade-O (with real cuts, hosting, and blends) that puts many of those "Remix Wednesday" songs next to other originals.

If you follow my blog, you'll know I have a fondness for this crew. And while I may not esteem this project as highly as I did Ruslan's Right Out Loud, it's still a solid effort and something to appreciate for the standards it maintains.

Also impressive: the contributions from Beleaf Melanin. On multiple tracks, this Baltimore boy ripped his verses like Omar Little does stash houses.

Download your copy for FREE right here.

theBREAX – Breax Over track list:

1. Breax Over
2. More Of (produced by Lex Luthorz)
3. Rock With You (feat. Theory Hazit, Caressa Lynette, & Shaady G) produced by Sound Collage Musik
4. Brilliant Realness (feat. Sho Baraka) produced by Jruckers, co-produced by Vic Padilla
5. Beginning Again (feat. Shaady G) produced by CIK Productions
6. All Powerful
7. Right Above It (feat. Andy “C-Lite+ Mineo)
8. Duces / Devil in a New Dress
9. Ruslan Medley
10. 90′s Mix
11. Money Need Me
12. Beleaf Medley
13. Not of this World
14. Whip My Hair (feat. NomiS)
15. Monster (feat. Mikel Anthony)
16. 6 foot 7

Sidenotes:

I'm told there will be a video coming for the "Brilliant Realness" track with Sho Baraka you'll hear on this mixtape.

Also, as Wade-O points out at the end of the project, theBREAX occasionally touch on some mature topics with frank language here. It's clean, but not necessarily for Sunday morning youth group play.

Christian music doesn't always have to equal "family friendly," but it should always be based in truth. BREAX Over is.

Vidz: Gospel DJ Cyphas

I have to admit, I'd never seen a DJ Cypha before this - much less one made up of Christian cats.

This took place at the First International Gospel DJ Conference held in NY on September 21-22. DJ Wade-O was there, taught a workshop, and told me a really cool story about the fellas rallying around an aspiring young gospel DJ who needed some equipment.

Read more about it here and enjoy the spinsters below.

The Wade-O Radio Show Plans Holiday Tour

Continuing to prove his program is “More than Music, It’s Ministry,” DJ Wade-O is currently routing stops for a holiday tour in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area.

While Wade’s DJ skills can easily be a part of the events, he is most excited about opportunities he will have to share and teach people about music’s impact on their lives and faith. The information can be presented through four different workshop sessions, each lasting approximately an hour long.

They include:

- The Reason for Christ-Centered Hip Hop
- From Podcasting to Syndication
- What’s in Your iPod?
- Reaching Young Black Males with the Gospel

“I feel like God has blessed me with a wealth of great experiences and education that it would be selfish not to share it with others,” Wade said. “When you’ve been given a platform like I have, it’s actually an incumbent responsibility.”

Special, surprise guest artists and performances will also play a part.

The tour will be available from Thanksgiving through New Years Eve. The gatherings are expected to be offered to the public for free and can be stand alone sessions or part of an existing event.

To book an event in your area, please contact DJ Wade-O's Management, The Kingdom Minded Group. They can be reached at (212) 203-4400 x 1 or Booking@KingdomMindedGroup.com

Is The Wade-O Radio Show Coming to a TV Near You?

Photobucket

Is The Wade-O Radio Show coming to a TV near you? Kind of…

In late August, DJ Wade-O wrapped principal photography on a TV commercial for his internationally known radio show. The 30 and 60 second spots will be used on Uprise TV in the United Kingdom and strategically placed in various markets where The Wade-O Radio show airs.

Wade spent nearly a full day in Philadelphia, PA shooting the spot with Christina Faith at several “top secret” locations. The commercial carries a storyline about where and how Wade-O secures exclusive music for his show. A few notable names from the world of Philly-based Christian Hip Hop also make cameo appearances.

“It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. Plus I got to dust off my acting skills,” Wade-O laughed. “Bet y’all didn’t know your boy was a ‘Guys and Dolls’ stage star in high school.”

Christina Faith said Wade needed very little direction and believes viewers will enjoy the commercial.

“Acting comes very naturally to him,” Faith said. “I pray God pulls more of his gifting out of him.”

Keep it locked to www.wadeoradio.com for details on when the finished product will be available for viewing.

My losing Rockets rap: Shane Battier On 'Em

So, as you may know, I lost my Rockets/Lakers bet with DJ Wade-O.

Still, I'm a man of my word and ponied up with my own "---- ---- On 'Em" remix in honor of Shane Battier.

I figured the Duke boy's glove-like defense of Kobe served as a perfect reference for our team. I mean, we were "down three dudes / so I guess it makes sense."

Listen and/or download (if you dare) by clicking here to visit the story at DaSouth.com. My full lyrics are there too.

To hear Wade-O's response, you'll need to check out his show with the great Kirk Franklin interview. Get it here.

BTW, I in no way claim to be an MC. This was purely a goof and I had fun with it. I hope you do too.

Wade-O Radio Honors Mothers This Weekend

It’s all about the ladies this weekend on The Wade-O Radio Show.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Wade is turning over the controls to his wife, Belinda Harris, who will be interviewing mom-to-be Charde Jones (bride of Christian rapper k-Drama) and a special surprise guest.

DJ Lady Grace will be handling the “Mix of the Week” and Wade-O Show intern Laide Mak will fill in for Sketch the Journalist on the “Holy Hip Hop News Blast” segments.

“It’s a true blessing to share my show with these ladies and allow my audience to hear directly from these daughters of Eve,” DJ Wade-O said.

“All of this is to accent the beauty of motherhood and address issues that, from time to time, get left out of the male-dominated holy hip hop scene.”

In addition to the special guests, tune in for hip hop and urban soul that honors and is performed by powerful women of God.

As always, listen to The Wade-O Radio Show on Saturday evenings from 11pm to 1am on the five stations in and around the NYC Metro Area owned by WRDR The Bridge-FM. You can also catch it on demand on DaSouth.com, HeadzupFM.com, or through your favorite podcast RSS feed.

Rockets v. Lakers = Sketch v. DJ Wade-O

Let the trash talk begin.

DJ Wade-O
and Sketch the Journalist (your humble blogger) are engaged in a friendly wager over the Rockets / Lakers NBA Playoff Series. The loser has to create an “Air Jordan On ‘Em”-style remix of k-Drama’s signature rap song.

“The funny thing is, neither one of us are MCs,” Sketch said. “If you ask me, it’s going to be the listeners who lose!”

The bet began when Sketch began to brag online about his hometown Houston Rockets’ first successful advancement into the second round of the playoffs in more than a decade. Wade, who claims to be a longtime Laker fan (“since Magic was wearing the short shorts”), decided to issue a challenge against his Holy Hip Hop News Blast segment host.

“We both Tweeted and hit up the message boards for ideas and a frequent suggestion was to ride the momentum of all the k-Drama remixes and mine some humor out of our weak attempts to rhyme,” Wade said. “I’m a huge sports fan and having the wins and losses mean a little something extra makes the games even more interesting.

“Either way, the end result should be entertaining to our audience,” Wade laughed.

The Houston Rockets surprised most NBA fans by stealing a win on LA’s home court Monday night. But anyone who follows “The League” is no doubt aware that Laker star Kobe Bryant is bound to enter Game 2 with a specific goal to right this wrong.

Keep up with the back and forth verbal gamesmanship by following both DJ Wade-O (@wadeoradio) and Sketch (@sketchthej) on Twitter and listen for the special “-------- On ‘Em” remix to hit The Wade-O Radio Show shortly after either team is the first to win four games.

The Wade-O Radio Show Goes International

Like the name of DJ Morph’s last mixtape, The Wade-O Radio Show is going “International.”

Starting Friday, April 17 the Christian hip hop show known for its “more than Music… It’s Ministry” focus will be aired on iPowerFM, a Canada-based internet station. Two weeks later, the show “crosses the pond” to the United Kingdom where it will air on G-Force Radio’s web outlet found at www.gforceradionetwork.com.

“God gets all the glory in this broadening and elevation of this music ministry,” DJ Wade-O said.

“We’re so grateful to our on-demand, press-and-play partners at DaSouth.com and HeadzUp-FM along with our over-the-air team at The Bridge FM here on the East Coast.

By adding these international, time-slot affiliates to our portfolio, we are able to see two more ways that Christ is providing us a new audience to serve with His message.”

In addition to the two overseas markets, The Wade-O Radio Show will also expand to a five-day schedule via Texas-based Zoe Radio’s internet feed. Starting on May 4, Zoe will broadcast The Wade-O Show Monday through Friday with the most recent episode airing on the first day of the week and then a reverse order cycle of previous episodes over the next four days.

Finally, the Nia Radio Network, based in South Carolina, will be adding The Wade-O Radio Show schedule right after DJ I Rock Jesus’ broadcast.

What all this means is that devoted Wade-O Show fans will now be able to hear the debut of new episodes a day earlier (by listening to the UK feed) and new Wade-O Show listeners will be able to catch up on previous spots by getting it in with Zoe Radio’s Tuesday-Friday flashbacks.

Note to Da' T.R.U.T.H. - I'm real

Photobucket

DJ Wade-O told me about this a few weeks ago and the interview just hit iTunes this week, but apparently during his set with Da' T.R.U.T.H., my man started off by saying "This is a question from Sketch..."

There was a stumble and then Da' T.R.U.T.H. asked if "Sketch" was just a character/persona that Wade played on his show.

Funny stuff.

I'm real T - I promise. :)

We met backstage when you were in town over a year ago. I wrote it up here on my blog and took a quick flick with you. (In your defense, you probably get asked to meet and take pics with 1,000's of cats.)

Anyway, I just thought it was humorous and Wade and I have speculated that maybe even my cartoon-ish avatar threw you off.

Photobucket

As you know, Wade-O's show is top notch and his conversation with Da' T.R.U.T.H. is no different.

Download the enhanced digital version of this show here and subscribe via iTunes if you can.

And T.R.U.T.H., next time you're in town let me buy you a milkshake or something and prove I'm not a ghost.

Yep, it's official. DJ Wade-O is hitting the airwaves in NYC and the surrounding area. My man's still going to continue the podcast and now just has a broader, more local platform for the newness.

Currently, The Bridge broadcasts Holy Hip Hop Pioneer DJ Floyd Cray’s ground-breaking “Gospel Vibrations” show from 11 PM to 1 AM every Saturday. The combination of the already built-in listener base from “Gospel Vibrations” and the present following of “The Wade-O Radio Show” podcast should present a sizeable audience for ministries, businesses, and advertisers seeking to target the coveted 16-40 years of age demographic set in the NYC/ Northern New Jersey Metro Area.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” DJ Wade-O said. “I started the Wade-O Radio Show Podcast with the intent of ministering to my friends through music and interviews and am grateful that I have been able to maintain the original mission the Lord gave me as I have made new friends all around the world.

“The show has grown to have listeners in nearly every state in the U.S. as well in countries like Canada, Kenya, Ghana, the U.K., and even Australia. I’m really looking forward to serving the New York and New Jersey markets and continuing the work of my predecessor, Floyd Cray. I hope this encourages all of my peers who are doing podcasts to keep pressing. We can get our shows placed on FM Radio!”

The syndicated version of The Wade-O Radio Show will continue to include exclusive music, artist interviews, holy hip hop news and commentary by Christian hip hop writer/columnist Sketch the Journalist, special segments, new label and artist information, and special giveaways to listeners.

The new broadcast will be used to give the radio audience the first chance to hear the popular radio show before it will be available for free podcast download the following Sunday.

The debut on-air show, Saturday, November 1, will be a “Best Of” show featuring clips and highlights from the past year. With a large archive of interviews from industry movers and shakers such as Tonex, Rockwilder, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Lecrae, Bushwick Bill, Da T.R.U.T.H., KJ-52, Trip Lee, Canton Jones, Corey Red, J.J. Hairston from Youthful Praise, and others, this will certainly serve as a dynamic show to launch the program.

Upcoming guests on The Wade-O Radio Show will include the Stellar award nominated group Frontlynaz, U.K Sensation Dwayne Trumpf, and Stellar award nominee, graphic design artist and DaSouth.com co-owner Aziz “Zee” Peregrino-Briman of Bezworks Design.

If you are interested in partnering with DJ Wade-O to continue to bring Christian Hip Hop to FM radio outlets, please contact Albee Beutel of the Kingdom Minded Group at 212-203-4400 ext. 101 or email albee@kingdommindedgroup.com.

Free DL: ReadyWriter & DJ Wade-O Mixtape

Photobucket

My boy Brinson from GodChaserz is a dude that obviously puts others before himself. Even though he recently dropped his own album, "Escaping Me" (which is the best I've heard from the label), he's promoted it by offering a mixtape from one of his other artists.

ReadyWriter's "Poetic Freedom" was an add-on bonus for orders of "Escaping Me" and is hosted by DJ Wade-O. Now, Brinson letting you take it for FREE, with or without a purchase.

Snag yours here.

And get your "Escaping Me" here.
