Saturday’s Event Hopes ‘Youth Can Lead’ Protest Against Sex Songs On Local Radio

This Saturday in Stafford, Texas a unified group of musicians and professional speakers will attempt to motivate teenagers to lead a rebellion against sexually explicit songs being played on Houston radio stations.

The free “Youth Can Lead” conference will take place from 6pm to midnight at Triumph Church and include performances and breakout sessions from local Christian rappers Tre9, Von Won, Gifted da Flamethrowa, 007 (from the 5th Ward Boyz), Frontline Movement, Governor, and Bless’T.

Bobby “Tre9” Herring (whom you might remember from the recent Feed a Friend/City of Houston permit dust-up) is in charge of the hip hop portion of the event and said he will be specifically targeting the song “Let’s Make a Movie” by Chicago rapper Twista and R&B artist Chris Brown.

The track, which is in rotation at both 97.9 KBXX and Hot 95.7, is about the narrators’ attempts to persuade a female to film their sexual tryst.

Especially when I'm shooting you on a mattress

Shawty, straight to the top, that's where we headed
And I'ma see my name in the credits
and be the sh-t if you let it"

“We’re not even asking these stations to play anybody else instead. There are plenty of positive artists they can choose from,” Herring said. “We simply want them to stop spinning songs that promote pornography and sexual immorality.”

Herring said he would like to get at least 1,000 complaints against “Let’s Make a Movie” to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC.) If that doesn’t get the song pulled the next step would be to get a group of teens to bring the issue before Houston City Council. A third step would be a protest outside of the radio outlets that play the song and a fourth effort would involve a boycott of advertisers to the stations.

Herring ran across the song when preparing for a recent sermon. He said when he read the lyrics to a group of adults, many were shocked.

“I’m finding a lot of people are concerned, but no one wants to lead the effort to get this stuff off of our airwaves,” Herring said. “Maybe we can get the kids to do it instead.”

Houston couple prevented from feeding the homeless due to permit issues appears before city council

On Wednesday, January 19 the Houston couple who was told they needed a permit in order to feed the homeless through their non-profit, grassroots ministry appeared before the City Council.

The story, which first appeared in the Houston Chronicle, made national headlines on sites like the Drudge Report, Huffington Post, and CNN.com. Additionally, Bobby and Amanda Herring were interviewed on Fox News, MSNBC, and other local stations.



During the City Council visit, Bobby Herring (who is also known as Christian rapper Tre9) explained what they do, apologized for any negative media attention their cause brought upon the city, and asked how they could work with the local government agencies to continue their work.

The Herrings were praised for their efforts by council members Mike Sullivan, Anne Clutterbuck, Jarvis Johnson, and Jolanda "Jo" Jones. There was also discussion of a new ordinance that would be drafted by council member Wanda Adams and the Health Department to accommodate situations like the one Feed a Friend is currently in. This will be examined more closely on February 7 by a committee to be steered by council member Jarvis Johnson.

UPDATE: Feed a Friend's City Council Meeting

Feed a Friend update from today's Houston City Council Meeting:

I spoke to Tre9 earlier. He said the City Council meeting went well.

The main takeaway is that Wanda Adams will be heading a committee to review the regulations regarding public feedings vs. commercial feedings. It's the commercial feeding rules that are apparently being applied here which may be the issue.

Part of Tre9's argument was that he was simply feeding friends from private kitchens. The question would be how does the city define "friend" and under what authority could they tell a person they could not share a meal with their friends?

Tre said Jarvis Johnson and Michael Sullivan also publicly commended them from the council. That new committee should start on Feb 7 apparently.

He said someone else, Kathy Barton from the Health Department, also offered to help him get certified to work in kitchens and such.

Vidz: Von Won & D-MAUB "Shine Their Light" in Houston

The young CUT-T D-MAUB was in Houston just after Thanksgiving and hit the city full force. On the cool, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a cat come to my town with such a full agenda.

Let me see if I can run it down for you – first off was the Black Friday video shoot in Tomball (of all places) for Von Won’s “High Beams On” single. This joint included some classic rides and a fully functional helicopter they used for some aerial shots and as part of the story line.

Then, he did an interview with 92.1 FM – Houston’s gospel station (and home of the Yolanda Adams morning show), and after that D-MAUB helped served the homeless as part of the Feed a Friend ministry.

Later, the dudes hit up a local retirement home, homie got a break to attend a Rockets game, then he did some prison ministry, spoke to the Houston Hip Hop Alliance meeting about full-time ministry, and ended with a set at Hip Hop Hope Tuesdays in 5th Ward.
